However, Kamal is about to face the ruthless reality of the maritime spot market. When Kamal calculated his budget 30 days ago, shipping a standard TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) cost $1,200. He locked in his sales contracts with his European buyers based on this freight cost.

Suddenly, a geopolitical skirmish breaks out near a major shipping canal. Vessels are diverted around a continent. A massive global shortage of empty containers ensues.

The Crisis: When Kamal calls his freight forwarder to book the ship for tomorrow's loading, the price is no longer $1,200 per TEU. It has skyrocketed to $8,500 per TEU. Kamal is contractually obligated to deliver the copper, but the unexpected freight spike will wipe out his entire corporate profit for the quarter.

  • Variation Margin (Mark-to-Market): Every single day, the Clearing House checks the Baltic Index.
